Dark Knight, a reflection of our Dark Society

Posted on 20 September 2008 by admin

the dark knight1 Dark Knight, a reflection of our Dark Society

I remember popping the bootlegged video cassette tape into our dusty old VCR. Lights off, window curtains closed. Sitting on the ground of our small stuffy rented room arms length from the new 17 inch TV my parents treated us to. No remote, just dial channel turner. This was after couple years of my sister and I continuously begged our parents for it.

This thing was huge, the size of a large microwave with a fake wooden pattern plastic case. We were immigrates into Canada and this was considered a major entertainment event for me as we could not afford going out or anything else that cost money for that matter.

I was in awed with Batman, the original. I loved the movie so much I watched it at least five to eight times complete from start to finish. I’ve always been a fan of Batman. I was a comic book fan but didn’t truly connect with any hero except for Batman. The main reason was he was human. No special powers. He was just like us. Something I can aspire to. And he was dark.

15 years later as I watched the Dark Knight, I remember the early days and compared how our society has changed during this time. Also with each Batman movie how the movie reflected the society and how it can affect society.

For instance the Batmobile is symbolic of how our society has changed. The original Batmobile was more of a showcar than a pragmatic crime fighting car. Whereas the new Batmobile is a grungy practical machine, small, compact, nimble, and looks pretty durable. If you compare the Batman himself, in the last two movies he is more human and flawed. You can see his weaknesses and mental angst. He gets attack by dogs, fights his moral dilemmas, in fight scenes he gets hurt. He is not perfect, he is human, he is not immortal but he tries his best. It’s no coincidence that other recent action flicks has this characteristic, movies such as the Borne series, the latest James Bond, and to a degree Spiderman. Movies are a reflection of society and culture.

We are at a point in our society where we are moving towards a deeper consciousness of our environment and our mortality. We believe that we are each flawed, we knowingly do things we should not. What ultimately matters is that we maintain our principles. That’s what make us a hero but it doesn’t come easy. It’s a constant battle.

This is clear of the eco movement. We know that there’s no easy turnkey solution and it’s not going to be easy but we have our principles. We know that we each can’t be fully sustainable over night and many things we do damages the environment but what matters is that we do the best can. Our principle is to constantly strive to change and make everyday decisions that will help.

As I spent the whole summer trying to come up with the theme for Fall 2008 and Winter 2010 collection nothing I came up with seems right. As I impatiently waited to watch The Dark Knight I knew it would have a major impact on the collection but didn’t know how. After a good night sleep after the movie the concept became clear to me. But as my unconscious continues to play, and our culture continues to shift, change, and surprise no one will know what will finally come out. Not even me, but that’s the fun of it all.

Bamboo first
Holt Renfrew keeps sharpening its edge.
The retail chain, which gives great play to Canuck clothing labels, has gone one step further by bringing on a largely unknown Toronto designer.

His name is Jing Liu and if you’ve never hear of him or his JUZD (pronounced joost) Bamboo streetwear collection, don’t’ be surprised. After all, he has never been trained in fashion design or cut his teeth at a design firm.

That, however, hasn’t stopped Holts from taking the unusual step of bringing the newbie designer’s graphic-laden garb-the world’s first designer bamboo label-to its high-end department stores.

The collection was delivered to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver earlier this month. Check out Liu’s work at: juzdbamboo.com

popart Exclusive Trafik Tradeshow in Miami to showcase JUZD

JUZD will be one of the exclusive 250 selected brands to show at the Trafik show in Miami happening at the Miami Beach Convention Center Wednesday September 24th – Friday September 26th 2008. MAGIC is the premiere show in the west coast whereas Trafik is starting to be one of the top shows for the east coast.

While New York continues to be the fashion capital of the US, the culture and style of clothing is different from New York compare to LA and Miami. New York is associated with the classic high end cut and sew fashion with little prints. However the fashion culture in LA and Miami is more towards the attention grabbing graphic tees.

Many buyers do not head over to the Las Vegas show instead chooses to stay on the east coast and go to Miami to finish off their buying. Miami fashion is more vibrant with a lot more colours and certain major brands don’t attend the Trafik show just because their brands don’t fit in. However this is the perfect market for graphic JUZD bamboo shirts. What better shirt to wear to cool down under the hot Miami sun.

Bamboo Fashion Is About To Take Flight

Posted on 14 September 2008 by admin

bambooweb Bamboo Fashion Is About To Take FlightOriginal post: http://www.thenewagenda.com/article/bamboo.html

Original article written By Stefanos Chen
The New Agenda: the lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious

Eco-Chic Has Gone From Hippie to HOT-Damn!

Before American Apparel undoubtedly corners this market, too, be the first on your block to go bamboo. The key to its sustainable applications is its astronomical growth rate. More garden weed than tree, bamboo can grow up to 18 inches a day, reaching a harvestable size within three to five years. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s up to 20 times faster than hard wood trees, which average anywhere between 50 to 100 years to cultivate. Best of all, bamboo absorbs nearly five times more greenhouse gases and produces 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees, according to some measurements. Did I mention it’s also naturally antibacterial?

But before you start recounting the itchy advent of Woody Harrelson-endorsed hemp, heed this mantra: A green aesthetic doesn’t have to mean ascetic. If its texture is comparable to anything on the market, it’s silk – a fact that is not lost on its wide range of purveyors. From bedsheets to bathrobes, camisoles to yoga clothes, bamboo fabric is steadily approaching mainstream acceptance. Take a closer look at some of your favorite retailers’ catalogs. This surprisingly soft fabric-alternative, which is actually a type of grass, not wood, is changing the way several companies think green. Though they may not feature these items on the front page of the catalog, many established stores are tinkering with the prospect of bamboo chic. Among these tentative giants: Urban Outfitters, Banana Republic, and Adidas. Even New York mainstay Anthropologie offers a smattering of bamboo products.

Yet despite select retailers’ enthusiasm, bamboo has thus far been ignored by most markets. So what’s taking so long? According to Jing, head designer at Juzd Bamboo (pronounced “Juiced Bamboo”) – a new line of urban streetwear made entirely with bamboo fabrics – it boils down to fear. After shopping his brand around to several big name retailers, the overwhelming response was yes on the clothing, no to bamboo. Most claimed that the eco-fabric was a promising yet “untested” prospect.

Jing was undeterred, and the enterprising designer decided to launch his own company, on his own terms. As a matter of personal pride, Jing regards his new label as an attempt to dislodge eco-conscious clothing from the clutches of one small, musky contingent. “It seems like all these other [eco-friendly] lines are designed for hippies, by hippies.” Through a pair of metallic D&G aviators, he shared with The New Agenda his vision for the future of bamboo clothing: “I want to be big like Diesel…but sustainable. These other companies are hollow, superficial. I want some meaning behind my brand, a real philosophy.”

Though there are certainly no hard feelings between Jing and his flower-power predecessors, he sees a future where Juzd offers a stylish alternative to the sack cloth and hemp of yesteryear; in short, a complete paradigm shift. “We have to aim our sustainable clothing to the masses. People don’t buy ugly clothing just to help the environment.” To ensure the highest quality product, Jing sought inspiration from all over the world; from Argentina to the Philippines, Australia to Canada, and he’s assembled a veritable think tank in green fashion. His collaborators range from print and fashion designers to wallpaper and comic book artists; the fruit of which yields a one-of-a-kind design every time.

Best of all, Jing guarantees the moral and fair treatment of all his workers, both locally and overseas in China – a rarely struck balance between ethics and praxis, even for the green industry. He is currently finalizing a deal with Holt Renfrew, a major Canadian retailer on par with Barneys New York, to offer a selection of exclusive Juzd designs. Until then, check out Jing’s original, limited edition T-shirts at juzdbamboo.com.

Still not convinced of bamboo’s bright future? Nothing moves the obstinate like some high-profile celebrity endorsements. According to a recent feature in Us Weekly (oh, the lengths The New Agenda goes to get the hot scoops), Angelina Jolie loves dressing daughter Shiloh in Kicky Pants’ line of baby bamboo clothing. Touting the benefits of naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial properties, it’s no wonder bamboo clothing is raking in celebrity dollars. For even more proof of bamboo’s versatility, the evergreen and always exciting Daryl Hannah offers an eclectic array of bamboo items on her website dhlovelife.com. From her “beauteous bamboo worm-bin” to exclusive “bad-ass bamboo snowboard,” Hannah firmly supports the myriad uses of bamboo – and alliteration.

So if you’re ready to run the full gamut of bamboo couture, gear up with these pioneering brands:

Is this the best selling JUZD shirt?

Posted on 12 September 2008 by admin

studio white bamboo clothing Is this the best selling JUZD shirt? This shirt is the favourite of many people. I wasn’t surprised when the first report I got showed it sold 2-3 times more than the other shirts. Can’t confirm how many days it was actually on the floor. Then on the second week it went all the way to second last. What was going on here!

This perplexed me for a long time. I was trying to schedule production of long sleeves base on the popularity of the designs.

The answer did not hit me till late last night after my visit to the two Holt Renfrew locations in Toronto. When I went to the Bloor location they had a new stock of Dom Rebel shirts in and JUZD was moved to a few less stacks. Due to the space they had to stack some of the black shirts on top of the white Studio. Ah! That’s why. These shirts used to be spread out and now the white ones are not visible.

So lesson here is that you cannot just look at stats. Shirt selling is based on many factors. But also the paradox is that the only practical way to measure the popularity of shirts is through stats.

Let’s say there are 100 stores carrying JUZD shirts, we cannot go into each one and note what happened during the week and discount that in the stats. That would be impossible and inaccurate. With everything that’s happening, the only way is to average out is with numbers. There will be a lot of abnoramlities but the law of averages will cancel everything out.
