Video on how to screen print t-shirts

Posted on 21 January 2011 by Sharky

Everyone loves t-shirts and can’t get enough of it. Check out this cool video explaining how it’s done.

Couple of additional notes:

1. their dry box probably has a heater attached so it dries real quick; if you are just drying it using room temp air let it dry for about a day

2. the lights they use ARE unfiltered black lights. other wise it takes much longer with basic lights. a 250 watt at about 12″ takes about 45 min

And here’s a tutorial on how to prepare your artwork with Adobe Illustrator.

Art of the Week: Eco Lacoste Polo by Tom Dixon

The great designer Tom Dixon collaborates with Lacorste to design the techno polo. The concept behind it is to minimize the packaging and make it as eco as possible. This was achieve by embossing instead of the printing on the box. I think the air tight sealed shirt packing looks cool, did it minimize the packaging? I think more could have been done.

Art of the Week: Love Lockdown by Kayne West – Directed by Simon Henwood

Posted on 03 June 2010 by Sharky

The spooky  vibe sent chills up my spin. There was something with this video that touched me deeply. Something that is just perfect, so perfect I felt detached from myself. And Time magazine critic Josh Tyraniel agrees naming “Love Lockdown” the best song of 2008. It is the perfect mix of the perfect song with the perfect video. I listened all night and went to get the the album in the morning.

The essence of the song was captured brilliantly in the video. The slow depress mode of the song. The symbolic elements such as being trapped, being house lockdown, the mesmerizing tone and feel, and the worshiping of the human statues. The motion and the tempo is synced with the with every millisecond of the song. There is no separation.

What is artistic and cryptic is the meshing of all the tribal symbols, spaceship, and juxtaposition of reality and the symbolic movements of what’s happening to him. The constant unexpected flow from real to what seems to be happening in his mind is so intertwined that there is really no separation which is what he feels like.

You can see more work form Simon Henwood here.

Art of the Week: Tado – Cute but Murderously Fun

cannibal tado group2 series 300x300 Art of the Week: Tado Cute but Murderously Fun

Tado's Cannibal series

If you are a fan of Kid Robot you will recognize these pieces. Tado have collaborated with Kid Robot many times. Tado is a team duo from UK who who does cute and colourful drawings.

Mike and Katie, two amazingly talented and imaginative graphic designers who create an insane cutesy world of crazy, funky characters. Their work includes illustration, animation, toy design…the list goes on.
Check them out…their creations will make the mind boggle but the heart glow! – Tado Facebook Fanpage

At first you might think Toki Doki because of the same cute and colourful fun-ness to it, the aesthetic styles are different. Tadu does more compositions, they create grand cities where you can enter and be part of it. It’s more a context of the characters in the whole city. There an extreme amount of detail in their art.

One of their unexpected work is a series called Private Panda Club where they add Tado elements to girls in lingerie. I like the creativity, it’s bringing their art to another medium, and I like it because there are girls in lingerie.

Art of the Week: 80′s Pop Cult Icon – Keith Haring

Posted on 12 May 2010 by Sharky

Keith Haring Radiant Baby

A strong symbol of 80′s pop culture, if you don’t know Keith Haring’s name, you know his work. His simple symbolic drawings are natural, colourful, and full of colours.

haring untitled1 300x295 Art of the Week: 80s Pop Cult Icon Keith Haring

Keith Haring was inspired by graffiti art and did chalk drawings in the subways of New York. He have done art for many museums such as Collingwood College, National Gallery of Victoria, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art.

What I like about his art is that it’s simple, happy, and full of movement. It is amazing on how much he can communicate with simple lines and 1 or 2 colours. I just love how everyone in his work is constantly dancing. It’s a party! Elegance is beauty. The more an artist can communicate with simple lines the elegant it is and therefore the more beautiful. There is a level of symmetry and story behave all his work.

Of course his great art have been translated in clothing by Zara and some K. Haring kicks from ADIDAS.

Funny my first memory of seeing Keith Haring was when I started studying Photography and saw this pic:

You can see how his work inspired Melina Matsoukas’ Rude Boy video for Rihanna. Don’t stop dancing!

Art of the Week – Rude Boy directed by Melina Matsoukas

Posted on 05 May 2010 by Sharky

When you are a big star like Rihanna you can pretty much come out with great videos evey time with the money you have to throw at it. And I’ve seen many great videos but her latest one Rude Boy directed by Melina Matsoukas really got my attention. When most people watch it they don’t really see it as better than other ones but I feel from an artistic point of view it’s innovative.

It takes risks and creates an unexpected feeling. And it’s put together very well with continuity and flow. What’s also relevant about this video is that it’s a strong reflection of the printed tee streetwear culture. The splashes of colour and the 80′s feel. What’s I also  like about it is the homage to the iconic pop culture artists Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. The use of graphics and treatment to the images also works great to create the overall high energy tempo.

While there are some controversy about Matsoukas copying M.I.A.’s Boyz and Galang videos I would have to disagree. From the surface one would think they are similar but if you watch it closely and look at the treatment and feel of it, it is absolutely different. One can only say that Mastosukas use a few of the techniques in the M.I.A. videos. It’s like someone unfamiliar with suits to see two people wearing a black suit and to say one copy the other. While someone more familiar with it can say, that’s a $300 and the other is a $2000 hand tailored bespoke suit.

While the director of M.I.A.’s Boyz started with some of the techniques and feel it is not as refined and inspirational as Mastsoukas’ work. This may be due to the budget but the experience, implementation, and the shear creativity of Matsoukas is like comparing a pro baseball player to a little league star.

You can also check out some of her other work which has a similar funky raw style.

Art of the Week: Romero Britto

mona lisa cat - Romero Brito

When I was on Miami Beach I was on my favourite street, Lincoln Road. I had some extra time while waiting for my friend so I decided to walk into a gallery. It happened to be the studio of Romero Britto, that was my introduction to this artist.

The most masterful thing an artist can do is create something simple yet absolutely different. Romero Britto’s simple, colourful, and playful artistic style have been translated from canvas to toys, buildings, cars.

Looking at his work makes you feel like you are living in a cartoon reality. What I like is the style transplanted on content of serious matter such as the Mona Lisa Cat above, Darth Vader, and my favourite piece Pure Sugar featuring MacDonald with Mao Zedong.

Art of the Week – Inner emotion in outter reality

Posted on 24 April 2010 by Sharky

portfolio timmy1 Art of the Week Inner emotion in outter reality

Timmy on the Metro by Alexa Meade

I glanced over this painting and something doesn’t seem right. The character seems to pop at you, the strong emotions, the sadness, the feeling of loneliness and not fitting it. It’s just on the train, an everyday boring mundane trip yet so must more to it. I could not stare and feel.

Then I move to see other works by Alexa Meade and it grabs me with her strong emotional painting. It makes you feel something unique. That is the purpose of art. Going to art galleries where you see many pieces of different artists with similar techniques bores me. The great artists are the ones that are brave enough to master 2 synergistic art forms to make something that is unique. Painting and photo is two classic art forms yet not much art is there that combines to create something we have not seen. This is what makes Alexa Meade different.

AlexaMeade Art of the Week Inner emotion in outter realityBut it’s not just a gimmick. She masterfully tells a story and if you see all her pieces for each series you will admire and discover the subtleties and beauty she is expressing through her work. As you look at more of her work you will be able to see how she stretches her unique style in many different ways.
