So you would think the most important skill in doing a graphic tee line is the ability to design or the ability to have designers to design for you right? That’s how most of the lines I come across do it. The artist is the president and the main person running the business.

But if you suck at designing but still want to make it famous and have a line that come out with designs that match Rocca Wear, Marc Ecko, Timberland, and the likes. What do you do then? You hire the agency that do their design! I got a call from one, Four Front, check out their site www.IntricateConcepts.com. The salesperson told me she came by our booth in Miami’s Traffic show. What?!? I don’t remember her, she probably got my name from the program guide.

Basically they do designs for quite a bit of top companies such as Timberland, Fila, DKNY, Marc Ecko, and many more. Their designs are very trendy. These are the things that I see in Las Vegas MAGIC week. All I can imagine is a room full of people sitting stamping design after design, moving this a bit and that a bit. Make a couple of copies, change font style and the text, sell a copy to Timberlind and sell one to Marc Ecko. The price aren’t too bad, $400 USD for a design.

This works for the big brands. A consumer sees 6 or 7 horrific designs then he see one good one, he buys that and thinks the brand is cool and buy more. They do more advertising and he goes back to their crap and buy more and they make money. No real design philosophy or concept is needed, buy whole bunch of crap designs that follow the latest trend forecast they paid hundred of thousands for and hope one or two is a hit with someone. If not then put the stuff on sale and still make money. The brand continues strong and they make money. Great formula, no design skills or designs needed!

Exclusive Trafik Tradeshow in Miami to showcase JUZD

popart Exclusive Trafik Tradeshow in Miami to showcase JUZD

JUZD will be one of the exclusive 250 selected brands to show at the Trafik show in Miami happening at the Miami Beach Convention Center Wednesday September 24th – Friday September 26th 2008. MAGIC is the premiere show in the west coast whereas Trafik is starting to be one of the top shows for the east coast.

While New York continues to be the fashion capital of the US, the culture and style of clothing is different from New York compare to LA and Miami. New York is associated with the classic high end cut and sew fashion with little prints. However the fashion culture in LA and Miami is more towards the attention grabbing graphic tees.

Many buyers do not head over to the Las Vegas show instead chooses to stay on the east coast and go to Miami to finish off their buying. Miami fashion is more vibrant with a lot more colours and certain major brands don’t attend the Trafik show just because their brands don’t fit in. However this is the perfect market for graphic JUZD bamboo shirts. What better shirt to wear to cool down under the hot Miami sun.

The MAGIC week in Las Vegas

The JUZD booth was on the edge of the eco section in POOL Tradeshow. This was our first clothing tradeshow and I was very excited. I’ve done two shows and each was disappointing but the cost for this one was a lot more so I anticipated the results to be a lot better. I got a booth for my friend Cristofer Carrado right beside mine.

It was our first show together and we got a bad location. All the way near the back. Very little traffic, we were in a pond with little fishes. All the tees sell for $20-$30 retail. It wasn’t right for us. To make it worst, POOL was known for it’s eco section but this year MAGIC had it’s own eco section and stole a lot of the bigger eco brands. The people that did drop by were very impressed and we made a few good contacts and got a couple of leads. Stay tuned to find out what happens.

We did have a good time and met some interesting people. Couple of interesting brands I checked out was Pnatrul. This brand is by musician Peter A Witting, which pimped out his booth with his drum set. He tells me that he get musicians he travels with to wear his gear, including Tommy Lee.

Right across from us were Forrest + Fauna, a brother sister duo. They spent the most time setting up their booth of all the lines at Pool. It took them two months to make and several hours to put up and take down. Painted, cut, diagramed, each piece of reclaimed wood. It felt like a nice personal shack in there, it even comes with a mini fridge…filled with beer. And they also produced their own eco paint. That’s cool.

For any designers that are looking to do a show, they can check out Thread Show. Their concept is pretty cool; they’ll rent you half of the space for half of the price. Instead of $4000 for Pool, you’ll pay only $2000 and get your stuff in. But the section is smaller than a regular booth.

Free shirts and live screen printing from Alternative Apparel. Pick your size and the screen you want and it’s done. I got this last time I was at the show. The shirt feels amazing, very light weight and fits good but after a few washed it looks crusty.

Tag bag lady! These bags are made from license plates from Africa. Buy a bag change a village. The company making the bags employs local African workers so you’ll be directly helping them with each purchase.

Magic, Project, Pool, and now Slate

Posted on 31 August 2008 by admin

JUZD at Pool Las Vegas Magic, Project, Pool, and now SlateAugust 25th to August 28th was the MAGIC week in Las Vegas for 2008, North America’s biggest fashion tradeshow. This year JUZD Bamboo showcased it’s wears at the Pool show. When I first started I tried finding the clear difference between the shows but I was unsuccessful.

From my experience I can tell you the clear cut differences between each show.

MAGIC – The biggest show of them all, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Most of the major brands are here. The average size of the booths are at least 800 square feet. This show covers everything from sportswear to formal wear to big label streetwear and even an outsourcing section. If you are a small player don’t even think about it. You’ll be overshadow by all the oversize booths. Retail tees from $20-$70. Mainly the lower and mid range.

POOL – This is for new brands and brands tailor to the Threadless type of customers. The younger crowd who like clever graphics and saying on tees. A lot of the shirts are Blanks from American Apparel with prints over it. Each design and concept is different from another. In addition these brands don’t have their name or logo on it. I see all of these brands as commodities because of that. I don’t understand why buyers would choose one over another.

There were also big brands that chase after this market, brands such as TokiDoki and Alternative Apparel which once again was the major sponsor for POOL. Retail tees from $20-$40.

PROJECT – Project which takes place at Sands Expo has the high end streetwear. Aim at the contemporary market this is where most of the brands are found. And this show is happening. Most of the people I know are in this show and they tell me that it was crazy. The first day they didn’t even had time to have lunch. They were busy taking orders left and right. This is a major contrast to the floor at POOL, especially where we were at, it was like a ghost town. Retail tees from $40-over $150.

SLATE – This year MAGIC had a new section to compete with PROJECT. It’s called SLATE. This is where the higher brands are. This was created to compete with PROJECT I would guess but all of the shows are owned by the same company. The layout is strikingly similar to PROJECT with individual booths section off. Large company branding is not allow so each booth is similar to the next. However the brands here are gangster urban brands. Not the premium streetwear of PROJECT. Retail tees are from $40-$70.

Eco sections – POOL was known for their eco section until now. JUZD was in the POOL’s eco section and the traffic was dead. This year MAGIC started their own eco section and all the big and even the smaller ones showcased there. They had live performances of hippie music which made the place sound like a funeral than a lively clothing show.

CHIC, bigger than MAGIC

CHIC2008 Beijing 9838 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC

CHIC clothing show (China International Clothing & Accessories Fair) is China’s version of MAGIC. MAGIC is North America’s largest clothing show where buyers and sellers meet. To compare the two I would simply describe it as this: Las Vegas is known for excess and larger than life but the Chinese did build the Great Wall!
CHIC2008 Beijing 9842 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC
The CHIC 2008 is China’s premiere clothing show and it’s already on its 16th show. It is the first event to be held in the New China International Exhibition Centre (NCIEC) with over 100,000 square metres. This was held from March 28-31, 2008. The NCIEC is Asia’s largest exhibition centre which started work in late 2001. It will host some of the Olympic Summer 2008 events. As I stare from outside it reminded me the Tian’anmen square with its large open space and wide structure. It conveys a sense of majesty and drama.

As I entered and started walking around I was quite taken away with the exhibits. This by far eclipses the show at MAGIC. The displays and areas were not that much larger than at MAGIC but the pure creativity and ingenuity was just spectacular. While at MAGIC it was one rectangular booth with wall enclosures and slightly different placements of table and chairs, each CHIC booth had a different theme and completely different layout with the table and chairs built into the theme.

CHIC2008 Beijing 9861 CHIC, bigger than MAGICThis exhibit shows the non use of rectangular space. Two levels with a Greek island seashore villa theme.

CHIC2008 Beijing 9867 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC This is Hazzys, a high end Chinese brand. Went with the simplicity design.

CHIC2008 Beijing 9903 CHIC, bigger than MAGICNice concept in creating a 3D space.

CHIC2008 Beijing 9883 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC The Chinese likes to knock off western brands. Does the Goldrooster logo reminds you of some other western brand?

CHIC2008 Beijing 9884 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC Even the western brands were here like PONY. Let’s say they brought their close minded thinking MAGIC booth with them.

CHIC2008 Beijing 9893 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC Kobron’s theme is an airport. Live models posing for pictures and showcasing their shirts all day long.

CHIC2008 Beijing 9896 CHIC, bigger than MAGIC Simple concept manikins on the top level with vertical sliced photos on the bottom matched with the black shows a very powerful and authoritative feel.

I will post more amazing pictures. Stay tuned!

From February 12th to the 15th the JUZD team was in Las Vegas checking out North America’s premiere fashion trade shows, MAGIC, POOL, and PROJECT. Despite the predicting US recession the buyers were spending and spending lots. It was a good season for the brands we visited. Above photo (Jing Liu aka me! Once again Christian Audigier was the talk of the show. With the largest booth at Project, guest stars, naked (but artistically painted) girls, swimsuit models, and a performance by Snoop, Christian Audigier’s booth was the spot to chill. Christian Audigier also premiere his latest label Crystal Rock, named after his daughter.

The colorful Creative Recreation showcased its new sneaker collection and style for Fall. While smaller labels such as Shmack Footwear were making head waves and extending their distribution for the fist time to Japan.

I was able to check out Raw 7. It maintained it’s high end grudge style. It brought its unique style of art to sandals and underwear (which I got samples of woohoo). Another brand that caught my eye was Hard 8, an up and coming brand out of LA. It has simliar grunge style as Raw 7 and strong symbolic designs. What was also great was the overall fit and design of the shirts. It fits and feels really good and the designs was perfect for the shirt.

Pool was also a very interesting experience. It was one big chilling lounge. Lots of cool and funky brands. Alternative Apparel was a major sponsor, they were giving out free t-shirts, hats, and other cool stuff. But one of the most interesting brand is Cyberoptix Tie Lab. They print designs on ties and their creativity and craftmanship are amazing. Had a chance to talk to Bethany who is the principle designer and she’s a really nice girl. It’s not the usual silk suit ties I’m use to.

As for Magic, the big show, it wasn’t all that interesting…to me anyways. Lots of huge brands. As for the streetwear section, it was like night clubs, with girls in skimpy outfits handing out flyers. But that’s the streetwear culture. I prefer the class of Project.

Overall it was a very enlightening trip and I had a lot of fun. We are currently trying to get a booth at the Project show in August. Come check us out!
