Industry Insider: Noelle Reno of Z by Zandra Rhodes

zandra rhodes noelle reno 178x300 Industry Insider: Noelle Reno of Z by Zandra RhodesEver wonder what makes someone tick? Or how they got their inspiration? What about what they’re up to when they’re launching their line into a brand new market? Each week we’ll bring you one step closer to understanding the fashion industry with our one-on-one interviews. Last week, I managed to catch up with Noelle Reno, of Z by Zandra Rhodes, as she was beginning her expansion into the US market.

No stranger to the fashion industry, Noelle has been a part of the business since the age of thirteen when she began modeling for Elite.  Fast forward on through to the new millennium, though, we find Noelle, not only in the UK, but also embarking on a new adventure – the founding of luxury cashmere line Degrees of Freedom, which garnered a strong celebrity following, including the likes of Paris Hilton and Victoria Beckham. However, in late 2008, Noelle announced her departure from the brand.

Through a mutual friend on the British Fashion Council, Noelle met with Zandra Rhodes, Britain’s most celebrated designer. The duo, after discussion, set out to launch a new line entitled Z by Zandra Rhodes, which not only highlights Zandra’s taste for prints, but also Noelle’s eye for young and fashion-driven shapes. Met with great reception last month at its launch in the UK, Noelle’s already busy at work expanding into the US market. Should you find yourself at Harvey Nichols, be sure to head up to the third floor where you will find yourselves in for a surprise. For the get-in-get-out consumer, the Z Machine offers a fast and easy way to shop. With the swipe of a credit card and the scrolling through of a touch screen, the product will be brought to you in its very own Z bag.

So when I met up with Noelle in the East Village in NYC, she was on already her third day of meetings with magazines and stores (let’s cross our fingers that the US buyers pick up the line!). For anyone that has hopped off any plane ride lasting more than six hours, you’ll be just as impressed as I was (trust me, you think you would get used to it, but you never really do – you’re always tired out much more than you’d expect). “I’m not much of a print person, but Zandra is, so you can definitely see her in the designs,” says Noelle, “but see the closer fitting silhouettes? That’s me. It’s about working together to find something that matches both our personalities, and we make a great duo.” Moving forward, Noelle seeks to infuse more knit and luxury cashmere-cotton clothing into the line so as to provide selection and luxury.

noelle reno zandra rhodes z machine 300x229 Industry Insider: Noelle Reno of Z by Zandra RhodesFor those wondering what gets put into the Z Machine and what gets simply placed on the floor, well, that’s up to both the buyers and Noelle. “The decision for what you can purchase via the machine depends on what the buyers feel would work best on the floor and in the machine; I also offer my input on what has worked best for me in certain markets too,” explains Noelle.

And in spite of her wide array of experiences, the now 27-year-old Noelle admits to only now better understanding the benefits of social media marketing, which has boomed within recent years. With so many of her friends advising her on such, Noelle chuckled and vowed to get a Twitter account going once she got hold of her computer in the UK. What’s lovable about the young entrepreneur is her down-to-earth personality and willingness to try out new things. I mean, how many people think about something like the Z Machine in the store? Tons. But how many actually push for it and succeed? Check out your local boutiques and department stores and you’ll find the answer to be “zilch,” unless of course you head on over to Harvey Nichols.

Z by Zandra Rhodes is currently sold at Harvey Nichols and Matches in the UK. The price point of the pieces average 70£ to 90£.

Tado's Cannibal series

If you are a fan of Kid Robot you will recognize these pieces. Tado have collaborated with Kid Robot many times. Tado is a team duo from UK who who does cute and colourful drawings.

Mike and Katie, two amazingly talented and imaginative graphic designers who create an insane cutesy world of crazy, funky characters. Their work includes illustration, animation, toy design…the list goes on.
Check them out…their creations will make the mind boggle but the heart glow! – Tado Facebook Fanpage

At first you might think Toki Doki because of the same cute and colourful fun-ness to it, the aesthetic styles are different. Tadu does more compositions, they create grand cities where you can enter and be part of it. It’s more a context of the characters in the whole city. There an extreme amount of detail in their art.

One of their unexpected work is a series called Private Panda Club where they add Tado elements to girls in lingerie. I like the creativity, it’s bringing their art to another medium, and I like it because there are girls in lingerie.

Someone’s personal photos on YouTube?

Posted on 02 March 2010 by Sharky

About 10 minutes ago I contemplated going to bed but decided to check a few things online then I found myself on a MySpace page with a youtube video. For some reason I click play. I hate MySpace, all pages look like crap and with little content.

This is one of those. I clicked it because I didn’t know what it was doing on this poorly composed thing called a page. A few seconds in I was hooked because of the song. To me it seem like someone compiled a bunch of personal photos and overlaid it with Portishead’s Glorybox, one of the most amazing songs and one of my favourite bands.

The more I watched the more intrigued I was. It was not what I expected, it ended being one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

I believe this is a better video than the original.

Toronto Eco-Fashion Designer Jing Liu to be Youngest Sponsor of 2008 TIFF Tastemakers Celebrity Lounge

Posted on 08 September 2008 by admin

Jing Liu (27) will represent young entrepreneurs at this year’s Fourth Annual Tastemakers Celebrity Lounge event, part of the Toronto International Film Festival from September 6 – 12. The Owner and Lead Designer of Toronto-based JUZD bamboo, designers of organic bamboo streetwear, Liu will be the youngest sponsor of the event which introduces tastemakers to innovative product releases from Canadian companies.

Toronto, Ontario – September 5th 2008 – The Fourth Annual Tastemakers Celebrity Lounge is one of the première events of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Jing Liu, Owner and Lead Designer of JUZD (short for Juiced) Bamboo, will be the event’s youngest sponsor, at the age of 27. Liu, along with other event sponsors including CTV’s eTalk and Sweetspot.ca (as the event’s major sponsors), HBC, Joe Fresh Style, Strellson, and PUMA, will expose event-goers to fresh and unique products coming from some of Canada’s trendiest and most cutting-edge entrepreneurs.

JUZD Bamboo will provide a collection of one-of-a-kind designer bamboo t-shirts for the Tastemakers Celebrity Lounge, running Saturday, September 6th to Friday, September 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the InterContinental Toronto Yorkville Hotel. Celebrities involved with the film festival are invited to stop by the Tastemakers Lounge during those times to pick up free goods offered by the event sponsors. The Lounge was opened to scheduled media outlets September 5th.

Liu made history two months ago when his first collection of edgy designer bamboo tees was picked up (with immediate delivery requested) by Canada’s leading luxury retailer, Holt Renfrew. His fast rise in the scene marked a rare event in the fashion industry, where retailers buy lines nine months in advance. Making the quick demand even more shocking is that Liu has no agency design experience or fashion background.

Liu isn’t stopping with Holt Renfrew in his efforts to take the eco-conscious design world by storm. Already working on several deals to extend his line, he expects to see JUZD Bamboo tees available in the US and UK markets before Christmas. Following on the heels of the Holt Renfrew buy, other distributors are also demanding immediate delivery. What is the appeal of the JUZD designs? According to a UK source, “People are tired of going into stores and seeing the same shirt after shirt. This is different. There is presentation, a totally awesome new fabric, and you got this comic in the back. I’m sold!”

Not only are stores taking notice. The media has also jumped onto Liu’s story of finding eco-friendly inspiration to combine his love of art and fashion. Within just 72 hours of announcing the Holt Renfrew deal, eight magazines, four online magazines, a TV show, a radio station, and eight major blogs confirmed coverage.

As the world is eyeing the stars in Toronto, there is a Toronto star that’s eyeing the world.
